Saturday Check Out

A good friend of mine and TARA sister, whose name is Hawk, has joined us in the blog world. Go over and give her a shout of welcome. This is one blog I'm sure you're going to enjoy.

I promise to have pictures and stuff up sometime this weekend. And next week starts the contest. Yep, you read that right, next week and it's back to the land of contest on the blog. Each week there will be a new book and new contest.

It's Almost Time and A Great Blog to Check Out

Karen Duvall's blog is running a five day free workshop on description. It's fabulous, go check it out. Yes, there's homework for those who want to participate and you might win a prize if you do. But the workshop alone is fun and you're learning more of the craft.

I know, someone is probably saying, 'No worries, I've got description down'. This is still a great workshop and really, do we ever finish learning in this business?

Anyway, the blog may be somewhat quiet for a few days. I leave tomorrow and although I do plan to blog from there, I may not be able to each day. Lot's of stuff to do and see. :)

I'm almost through packing. Maybe I should say, I'm almost through re-packing. If you go to Karen's site and read my comment, you'll get the idea.

Come back and let us know what you think or if you posted a comment.

Vicki

Saturday Check Outs

Check out the The Plotmonkeys today. They have HelenKay Dimon in the jungle and she’s posting about Recycling, Reusing and Any Other R You Can Think Of (her title). The post rocks and every aspiring or published author should read it.

Come back and tell me what you think? Have you recyled or reused a wip before? Did you have cut it all and start over or could you use most of it.

Tomorrow I’ll post the winner of Stacey Kayne’s book Maverick Wild.

Contest, Blog Check Outs and Retirement Homes

It’ Monday and President’s day, which for some of us means time off from the day job. WhooHoo, I’m one of those people. :) Since I have a little more time on my hands than normal, the blog is long today, but well worth the read. Lot’s of good things happening.

It also means it is time for a new contest. Actually I’m going to announce two contest. Yay, I love to have contest, especially when I’ve just finished reading a great book!

The first one is for Ellie, who won on my Pay It Forward contest. Since she doesn’t have a blog, she is going to do her PIF contest through mine. Her PIF runs from today through next Monday, February 25th. All you need to do is leave comments to her each day in order to be entered. Once she announces the winner I’ll post her email contact and she’ll take it from there.

Prizes for her contest include books, chocolate or a cute item. Ellie tell us what the cute item is.

This week I’ll be giving away a copy of Stacey Kayne’s book Maverick Wild.

This is the second book in the Wild series and I could not put it down. Now I’m waiting (not patiently mind you, but waiting) for the last in the series to come out. And no, I’m not giving away mine, it’s signed by Stacey to me. Who ever wins will receive a brand new shiny one. Stacey is also blogging over on Writers at Play today. Another great blog, where she and other authors or very soon be authors blog.

Here’s the back cover blurb:
Chance Morgan had locked away his heart. Until Cora Mae Tindale crossed half the country to find him. The beguiling creature who insisted on turning his serviceable ranch into a home was hiding something—and Chance was hell-bent on finding out her secrets!

Cora Mae only wanted a place to hide, but her youthful protector had grown into a war-hardened rancher with looks that could tempt a saint. Yet his dark glances were filled with distrust…and unmistakable desire. Cora Mae's childhood crush was rapidly becoming a much more adult craving!

I’ve mentioned Bruce’s blog before and if you didn’t go check it out and make it a daily read then, you should now. He’s Leslie Kelly, from the Plotmonkey’s husband and his blog rocks.

Reading his blog I found, stumbled, or whatever you want to call it, onto Malicious Intents blog. Love this blog. And it’s where I found the clock. Props to you MI.

The other day she posted this post from her father-in-law and I told her I was going to post it here. So, just when you thought you knew everything for retirement…think again, my friend.

From MI’s blog:

NO NURSING HOME FOR US

Guess what, Holiday Inn offers 24 hour service 7 days a week around the clock!!!!!
How is that compared to Nursing Homes rip off??????
No nursing home for us. We are checking into the Holiday Inn!
With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old & feeble. We have already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long term stay discount, plus senior discount, it's $49.23 per night. That leaves $138.77 a day for: Breakfast, lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. $5 worth of tips a day will have the entire staff scrambling to help you. They treat you like a customer, not a patient.

There is a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride free. The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp). To meet other nice people, call a church bus on Sundays. For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up. It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today. And you are not stuck in one place forever, you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city.

Want to see Hawaii? They have a Holiday Inn there too.
TV broken?
Light bulbs need changing?
Need a mattress replaced?
No problem!
They fix everything, and apologize for the inconvenience.

The Inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks to see if you are ok. If not, they will call the undertaker or an ambulance. If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life. And no worries about visits from family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation. The grand kids can use the pool.

What more can you ask for?

See what I mean, love this. What a concept.

As always leave comments through out the week to be entered. Just make sure if you’re entering Ellie’s you let us know.

Vicki

Contest You Don't Want To Miss Out On

Really exciting happenings over at Bookends. They are running a contest of the first 100 words of your manuscript. However make sure you read the post. You will only be able to submit when it’s your genre, otherwise it will not count.
Yesterday was mystery and I believe next will be paranormal. When it’s your genre you have about 24 hours in which to post your 100 words (absolutely no more than 100) and then they announce the winner within a couple of days and go on to the next genre.

This is not only a great opportunity to get your work in front of a fabulous agency, but when you look at posting 100 words, you realize how much you have to tighten those words. At least I did. :)

Also today is the day to choose a title for the Manuscript Mavens CYOA story. You can also read the past chapters of the mini book. And there are prizes to be given away. Prizes, people, you know we all love prizes. :D

Hope your weekend is great and remember to write, research, or plot that book. Check back on Monday for the first book contest of the year (not counting the PIF contest).

Vicki

Pay It Forward Winners, Saturday Check Out, and a Meme

I'm so excited!!! It's Saturday and I get to announce the Pay It Forward winners. :D

Sarai and Ellie (I did not have a link for Ellie). WhooHoo!!! Yay and congrats to you both.

The link above will take you back to the orginal post. I loved this idea and when I won I could not wait to do it on my blog.

So, Sarai and Ellie, in order to accept your prizes you will now need to also Pay It Forward.

The prizes you can choose from are:

1. One book and an author goody bag
2. Two books
3. Author goody bag – this one has more stuff in it than the one with the book

Please email me at vickilanewrites at yahoo.com and let me know which you would like. Please give me two choices as the first person to respond will have their first pick.

Now for a Saturday Check Out: Alison Kent is blogging over on the Plotmonkeys today. She is talking about Plotting and Braiding Hair. You'll have to go read it to know what I/She means. Trust me it is worth the read.

Also, don't forget the Manuscript Maven's story is continuing on. If you haven't read them, today is a great day to read the past ones and catch up. The story is great and you can vote on what is going to happen next. And, there are prizes to be given away when the story is completed. Hunk, and suspense, and comedy, oh my…

I was tagged so here you go:

Like Karen I was tagged twice. First by Sarah and then Karen.

So here goes, six unimportant things about me.

They say the rules of this meme are simple:

1. Link back to the person who tagged you.

2. Post the rules on your blog.

3. Share six unimportant things about yourself.

4. Tag six random people at the end of your blog entry.

5. Let the tagged people know by leaving a comment on their blogs.

SIX UNIMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT MYSELF:

1. I have curly hair, starts about two inches from the top of my head. Although most people never see it any way but straight.

2. Although Rock is my favorite music, I love Opera too.

3. My real name is Vicki, not Victoria, which I wish my mom had named me. I'd still go by Vicki, but I like Victoria. :)

4. I had to give away my bestest dog, Teddy, in the world in order to keep a very close friend from losing her condo.

5. When I was young I always held my nose if we drove over bridges.

6. I can't sleep with socks on my feet at night.

And as per the rules I am linking back to Karen Lingefelt and Sarah Makela. For my tags…hmmmm…, I know how much you all love to do these things, hee hee, so here is who I shall tag. Stephie, Patricia, Danika, Bill, Ava Rose, and last but never ever least, Tawny

Wow, that was a lot for a Saturday! Hope you are having a great weekend doing what you love best.

Happy Friday Everyone! Today is the last day of the Pay It Forward contest. To be entered all you need to do is leave your comments. Tomorrow, I'll pick two winners and those winners will choose their prize. You can check out the post with the prize listing here.

I was one of the winners over on Carolyn's blog and now it's my turn. Hopefully the winners here will pay it forward on their own blogs. Cool idea.

Don't forget to check out the Manuscript Mavens for today's installment. If you haven't read the past ones, you can go back and read them up to date. This is another great story they are doing, along with some fabulous authors.
At the end of each days 'chapter' you get to vote on what happens next. So much fun, and there are prizes to be won.

Tuesday Check In and a Plotmonkey Check Out

Leslie Kelly's husband, Bruce, is blogging over at The Plotmonkey's today and it is a great post. He has his own blog as well.

If you are a regular reader of the Plotmonkey's, you have no doubt read his comments here and there. He comes out of lurkdom once in a while.

Since most of us write romance and I believe all of us read it, today's post is fabulous.

I'm checking in with 476 new words, two chapters edited but not in the laptop yet, and two paragraphs written of the synopsis. I know, two paragraphs is not much, but hey, it's a start. :) This weekend I had plans to move far into the revision land. Didn't happen. I had TARA board things to do and there was not time for anything else. Next weekend, I will have three more chapters completed and maybe even the synopsis. Yes, Laurie K., I hear you drumming your fingers on the desk. I promise to do my very best to have the first POS of the synopsis done.

How's your week been? Did you make your goals? Have you set your goals? And last, but certainly not least, did you check the Plotmonkey's blog?

WW's and PD's,
Vicki

Saturday Check Outs

Man, this has been a crazy week at the day job. To say I’m glad it is the weekend does not begin to cover it.

Things are a changing and while change can be a good thing, it also stirs the pot. Sometimes what comes up from the bottom is not so much fun. Sometimes it brings up something that is fabulous and you didn’t even know it was there.

We had both happen, so in one respect it is exciting and in the other…not so much.

Today is “Saturday Check Outs”, and I think you’ll love this new blog. Writers at Play, or as they might be known to some of you as the Playground is a not a new group, they have been together for about three years. The blog, however, is new.

It’s entertaining, fun, and they share their experiences as writers. The talent in the group is amazing. Many of them are published, have won the Golden Heart, and/or contest finals and wins.

Sue Kearney is guest blogging over at The Plotmonkeys today. Her topic? Agent hunting. This couldn't come at a better time. With the year still very young, many of us will be querying agents and she has some fabulous advice. Check it out!

So, go check them out and then come back and let us know what you think. My guess is you will LOVE them.

Vicki

Happy New Years a Little Early and a Saturday Check Out

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Years. I'll be back later on to talk about...whatelse...goals for the new year. More than likely you'll be seeing this same topic on bunches of blogs. It's the new year though and that's what we do. Of course if you look in the tiny print you'll see the normal, must lose weight goal. :)

Anyway, check out this link. Phyllis Middleton is a pre-published author (her words, and I love them), who has great insight on how to write the crime scenes in your books. She is also has some great workshops coming up for any of us who are writing books with said crime scenes.

I'd tell you more about her and her life, but go check it out. I know, I'll be keeping her contact info. There are times when you just need to know about fingerprints, crime scene tape, and oh so much more. :D

Happy New Years to all of you,

Vicki

Not So Much Cold Here Now...

Our weather in Sunny Florida changes by the hour. Not the day or week but the hour. You could leave your home in the morning and it's cold (our cold)but by the time you get settled into your office and go outside for break you find you no longer need that long sleeve sweater. In fact, now you're wishing for the short sleeve blouse you eyed in the closet this morning. I really don't like this kind of weather. I. Want. Seasons. Not that I'm going to get them but still a girls gotta dream.

I found a great blog for writers. Edittorrent had wonderful advice on writing. Check it out and let me know what you think. As I have said before, you must continue to improve your craft. Just when you think you got it, that's when you'll read something and a little (or huge) nugget will be sitting there shinning bright, just for you.

The presents are wrapped. The ones that are being mailed today anyway. I've got fingers crossed they will make it by Christmas. The Post Office says yes so I'm praying they are correct. Next year? Present for out of town bought and mailed earlier or it's gift cards. :)

Gotta go do the work holiday lunch thing today so I'll be back later.

Let me know if you checked out the site.

Vicki

Saturday Check Outs

Just a quick hello and happy Saturday to everyone. I've added a couple of links on the side but thought I'd give them to you here as well.

The first one I found on Diana Peterfreund’s blog. It a great blog for all aspiring writers and any writers who haven't been recently published to read. Dear Agent Manners is a must read.

The second one I found through one of my chapters From The Heart Romance Writers and I thoroughly enjoyed reading her post. I'm sure you will too. Stephie Smith gives a great outlook on writing and glimpses into her own life.

So check them out and come back and leave your comments.

Hope your having a fab weekend.

Saturday - Check Out The Plotmonkeys

Over in the Plotmonkey's jungle today they have author Cindi Myers. She is giving fabulous tips for writing.

If you haven’t been reading the Plotmonkeys what are you waiting for? This is a must read blog IMVHO. It’s both fun and informative.

During the week you'll become family as you read about their daily lives. Friday's is contest day! WhooHoo!! Gotta love contest and they have one of the best around. On Saturday’s you’ll find mini writing workshops to strengthen your craft. And Sunday's they announce the Friday winner. :)

Also, on Monday be sure and check Anne-Marie Caroll’s blog on Writing Software. On Tuesday she’s doing an interactive writing blog. Anyone who knows AM, knows that she has a great sassy comical voice. This is one blog you’re going to love.

I’m off now to a “Writers in Residence” workshop. Always learning, always improving the craft, and always taking advice from well-known authors who’ve paved the path.

Happy Writing Everyone,
Vicki
